After release

Exonerate a posting

Close out a released posting once every hearing is behind the defendant, so it stops counting toward your liability.

A released posting still counts as your agency's liability until the defendant has made it through their court dates. Exonerating is how you mark that obligation as over. The posting moves to Exonerated, the co-signers are told they're no longer on the hook, and it leaves your liability.

Before you start

  • You can edit the posting. Only the posting's assigned agent or an agency admin sees the Exonerate button.
  • The posting is released and open. A closed or archived posting can't be exonerated.
  • No court date is still ahead. While a hearing is coming up, the posting's badge reads Awaiting Court Date and there's no Exonerate button. The status card tells you how many court dates are pending.
  • Every past court date is marked. Each hearing that has happened needs an attended or missed mark. Until it has one, the posting's badge reads Mark Attendance and the status card says how many are left, for example 2 court dates still need attendance marked. Mark each one attended or missed before exonerating. See Mark court attendance.

When all of this is true, the posting's badge reads Exonerate, and on the Dashboard it waits in the Waiting for agent lane. A posting whose payment plan needs you shows Verify Payment or Payment Overdue instead, and you can still exonerate it. The status card on the posting says This posting has no upcoming court dates and can be exonerated.

Record every hearing first

A posting with no court dates at all counts as ready to exonerate. Make sure you've added every court date before you exonerate.

Exonerate

Click Exonerate

In the status card at the top of the posting, click Exonerate.

Confirm

The Exonerate this posting? dialog explains what will happen. If the payment plan still has principal owed, it says the plan keeps running. Click Exonerate.

If a past hearing still has no attendance mark, the Exonerate button is still there, but when you confirm, Vonda refuses and shows a message like Mark attendance on 2 court dates before exonerating. Nothing changes on the posting. Mark those hearings and try again.

What happens next

  • The status changes to Exonerated. The status card reads Posting exonerated, and there's nothing left to do on the posting.
  • Every co-signer is told, on the contact they verified, that their obligation has ended. If their payment plan still has principal owed, they're told instead that the court case is finished but the payment plan continues until it's paid off.
  • The co-signer's bail page says it's over. The card at the top of their page reads that the defendant's bail is exonerated, their obligation has ended and there is nothing more they need to do. Their documents stay there to download. If their payment plan still has principal owed, the card says instead that the court case is finished but the payment plan continues until it's paid off, above the Payment plan card they keep paying from.
  • It leaves your liability. On the Postings page it moves from the Liability shelf to the Exonerated shelf, and it no longer counts toward your active liability in Reports.
  • No more reminders go out for its court dates.
  • Held collateral stays held. The posting still shows its Collateral card, and a Still holding collateral banner reminds you to record its return or forfeiture.
  • You can archive it when you're done with it. Archiving is for admins.

Exonerating can't be undone.

Collateral is still yours to return

Exonerating doesn't touch collateral. If your agency still holds collateral on the posting, a Still holding collateral banner shows at the top of the exonerated posting, naming the amount: the bail is over, so the family's money is owed back. On the Collateral card, click Mark returned once you've handed it back, or Mark forfeited if you kept it to cover a loss. The banner goes away either way, and the posting stays under Holding collateral on the Postings page until then. Archiving doesn't clear it. See Request collateral.

A payment plan doesn't hold it up

The court case and the money are separate. You can exonerate a posting whose payment plan still has principal owed: the co-signer keeps paying the installments, and you keep collecting them on the Payment card. The posting can only be archived once the plan is paid off. See Collect installments and payoffs.
